Level 2 – F. Moral development
Late pre-conventional: retribution
Romanticising and revelling
The level of Sensationality fits a transition from late preconventional (what’s in it for me?) to early-conventional morality (what are the tribe norms?). The guiding questions are: what does the subculture think is appropriate, what are the tribe norms? The development of virtues and conscience is derived from this search for acceptance. Morality is often retributive: you do this to me, so I will do that to you. Transactions are still strongly coloured by what we hope to get out of them for ourselves. The simple ‘good versus bad’ morality of the young child is now replaced by a more ambivalent relationship to ‘evil’. Violence and crime can begin to fascinate and eclipse the younger good-evil divide.
The awakening libido delivers the often-occurring fixation on sex and/or violence. Gradually, this libido may be sublimated into intellectual achievements, sports or art. At this level of development, we regularly see the tendency to romanticise and revel. This can also occur in moral development and then lead to excessive indignation, blaming or victimhood.
In Bitcoin-Leadership this is one of the high time preference, low morality drivers of Bitcoin adoption. They refer to memes like ‘when Lambo?’ or ‘you come for the greed, you stay for the revolution’. The second part of this saying describes the transition from level 2 egoistic morality to level 4 social consciousness.
