Level 2 – E. Identity
Reproduction and intensity
Adapted to subgroup
Subgroup, gender, likes and dislikes define identity: I am a man/woman of this type, this ethnic/religious background, I love that sport, I hate that food, I love this kind of music, I’m typically… I’m just like this…. So in fact, identity is still strongly subgroup determined. The insecure adolescent often hides in the ‘we experience’. Beneath this superficial we-experience of the subgroup lies a paradoxically strong egocentrism. This may be accompanied by an underlying sense of loneliness and insecurity about one’s own attractiveness.
Key Questions
• To whom do I (not) adapt?
• Who or what fascinates me?
• Who or what repels me? Who or what do I covet?
• Who or what do I emulate? How do I find suitable friends?
• What do I have to be like to be attractive?
• What challenging and exciting things can I do?
• What type am I?
In Bitcoin-Leadership this is a relatively young separation between in-group and out-group. We see people build their identity as Bitcoin-only (‘Maxi’s’), or crypto. The intensity of the feelings of disgust of the other groups is partly damaging, partly constructive. We see it in the wearing of Bitcoin or crypto-t-shirts and other merchandise. Other, more mature forms of identity can paradoxically be the anonymous identity of many early adopters. The paradox is that they become famous, partly because of their anonymity.
